Dear BKP Partner,

Greetings from Bagong Kulturang Pinoy (BKP)!

BKP, a duly-registered, non-profit, non-government organization whose mission is to develop a reading culture among Filipino children especially those in marginalized communities, has been your partner for quite some time now.

Partnership with your organization has helped us pursue this mission as we helped build reading centers and conducted the Concentrated Language Encounter (CLE), a proven method for improving literacy developed through Rotary International.

However, as we continue to look for ways to support teachers who may want to provide their students with relevant and effective education, we are exploring alternatives that may help improve the teaching of reading in BKP-supported schools. The focus is on equipping the students with critical thinking skills and basic reading strategies such as visualizing, predicting, questioning, making connections, monitoring their thoughts (metacognition) and summarizing. These skills may help the students not only to engage in the learning process but to contribute in shaping their education.

It is in this light that we would like to invite you to a BKP Literacy Workshop where we plan to share the BKP Resource Manual on Teaching Literacy. This is a compendium of activities and strategies such as the Reading Buddies, Readers' Workshop, Literature Circles, Readers' Theatre, Partners' Share, Interactive Read Aloud etc. The seminar/workshop aims to demonstrate how each of these literacy modules may be properly implemented so that we can achieve the maximum results: students who are self-directed learners and small reading/learning groups that are self-propelled.
