BKP Receives Peace Corps Grant

 BKP learned on Dec. 6 that the grant proposal, initiated by  Alice Quilicot, director of BKP-Philippines was accepted. Our volunteers will be leading workshops on read-a-loud  and our new Thinking While Reading programs for older students in at least 8 regions of the Philippines. We have renamed these programs FSER, First Steps to Engaged Reading. The proposed regions include Batangas, Albay, Isabela, Negros Occidental and Oriental, Cariarines Sur, Olongapo/Subic, and lfugao, but details are still being worked out by the Peace Corps. Other regions might be included and the Peace Corps volunteers in those regions have to go through an application process. 

We, in the U.S., have been asked to ship a goal of 50 boxes to these regions by September. These should contain primarily elementary and day care  level story books, which are in good condition. This means collecting approximately 20,000 books. We could use some help! If you are in the Boston area and can donate books, or run a book drive, you can drop off books when we pack (see below) or e-mail me at bkp@bkpinc.org to arrange for pick up or drop off at another time. Location: Centre Congregational Church, 5 Summer Street, Lynnfield, MA
(Todd Hall in lower level)

Dates: Generally we meet on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of the month, but dates 
and times will be confirmed, as we go along since there could be 
cancellations due to weather or conflicts with other church functions. We usually pack from 9:30-between 12 and 1:30, depending on our book supply.
